Upgrade ESX 4 Update 2 to ESX 4.1

email post
Upgrade ESX 4 Update 2 to ESX 4.1

Problems with VUM (VMware Update Manager) lead me to upgrade our ESX 4 U2 hosts to ESX 4.1 using the command line. During the upgrade, I was getting an error about a certain rpm package that would not uninstall properly (esxupdate error 15), so I've included that as part of my instructions.

To prepare for the upgrade, you need to download the ESX pre-upgrade zip file as well as the 4.1 upgrade zip file. I used WinSCP to copy them to the /tmp directory on each ESX host, then put the hosts in maintenance mode using vCenter before doing the upgrade. The whole process is pretty quick once you've downloaded and staged the zip files.

Note these instructions assume you use sudo for admin tasks, if not, leave it out.

1. install pre-relase patch: sudo esxupdate update --bundle=/tmp/pre-upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip

2. install upgrade: sudo esxupdate update --bundle=/tmp/upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip

3. remove RPM from update 2 that won't remove autmatically (the first command checks to see if it is still installed, the second removes it if it is still there): sudo rpm -q vmware-esx-apps-4.0.0-2.17.261974 sudo rpm -e vmware-esx-apps-4.0.0-2.17.261974

4. reboot sudo reboot

5. Afterwards, you can log back in and check the host version: sudo vmware -v

Distances itself from exposes; will instead pass on the information to independent news media

With the big brother closing in on beleaguered WikiLeaks architect Julian Assange, his former partners at the project are deserting him for a similar project. Christened Openleaks, the new non-profit organisation is founded by the former associates of Assange at WikiLeaks. The erstwhile partners claim, on the condition of anonymity, that Assange's high-handed approach is what made them break off into a separate entity.

Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter quoted one of the founders, 'As a short-term goal, this is about completing the technical infrastructure and ensuring that the organization continues to be democratically governed by all its members, rather than limited to one group or individual.' The ex-partners claim Assange's personal problems disrupted WikiLeaks from its goals. They contended that his experiences from the past were motivating his autocratic approach in pursuing issues without taking the collective into consideration.

In a clear departure from WikiLeaks' ethos, Openleaks will not directly publish the exposes. It will instead pass on the same to independent media entities. Openleaks intends to position itself as a neutral mediator with no political agenda. According to them, this will shield them from government wrath. The basic idea behind the move is to place the burden of editing and authenticating the information to third parties. The governments and other entities at the receiving will then have to contend with the independent media, which Openleaks believes would be more resilient against such pressures.

Security issue in Website Optimiser

Security issue in Website Optimiser

Dear Website Optimiser user,

We are writing to inform you of a potential security issue with Website Optimiser. By exploiting a vulnerability in the Website Optimiser Control Script, an attacker might be able to execute malicious code on your site using a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attack. This attack can only take place if a website or browser has already been compromised by a separate attack. While the immediate probability of this attack is low, we urge you to take action to protect your site.

We have fixed the bug, and all new experiments are not susceptible. However, any experiments you are currently running need to be updated to fix the bug on your site. Additionally, if you have any Website Optimiser scripts from paused or stopped experiments created before 3 December 2010, you will need to remove or update that code as well.

There are two ways to update your code. You can either stop current experiments, remove the old scripts and create a new experiment, or you can update the code on your site directly. We strongly recommend creating a new experiment as it is the simpler method.

Creating a New Experiment

  1. Stop any currently running Website Optimiser experiments
  2. Remove all the Website Optimiser scripts from your site
  3. Create a new experiment as normal. New experiments are not vulnerable.

Updating the Website Optimizer Control Script Directly

  1. Locate the Control Script on your site. It looks like this:
A/B Test Control Script
<!-- Google Website Optimiser Control Script -->
<script>
function utmx_section(){}function utmx(){}
(function(){var k='XXXXXXXXXX',d=document,l=d.location,c=d.cookie;function f(n){
if(c){var i=c.indexOf(n+'=');if(i>-1){var j=c.indexOf(';',i);return c.substring(i+n.
length+1,j<0?c.length:j)}}}var x=f('__utmx'),xx=f('__utmxx'),h=l.hash;
d.write('<sc'+'ript src="'+
'http'+(l.protocol=='https:'?'s://ssl':'://www')+'.google-analytics.com'
+'/siteopt.js?v=1&utmxkey='+k+'&utmx='+(x?x:'')+'&utmxx='+(xx?xx:'')+'&utmxtime='
+new Date().valueOf()+(h?'&utmxhash='+escape(h.substr(1)):'')+
'" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></sc'+'ript>')})();
</script><script>utmx("url",'A/B');</script>
<!-- End of Google Website Optimizer Control Script -->
Multivariate Test Control Script
<!-- Google Website Optimizer Control Script -->
<script>
function utmx_section(){}function utmx(){}
(function(){var k='XXXXXXXXXX',d=document,l=d.location,c=d.cookie;function f(n){
if(c){var i=c.indexOf(n+'=');if(i>-1){var j=c.indexOf(';',i);return c.substring(i+n.
length+1,j<0?c.length:j)}}}var x=f('__utmx'),xx=f('__utmxx'),h=l.hash;
d.write('<sc'+'ript src="'+
'http'+(l.protocol=='https:'?'s://ssl':'://www')+'.google-analytics.com'
+'/siteopt.js?v=1&utmxkey='+k+'&utmx='+(x?x:'')+'&utmxx='+(xx?xx:'')+'&utmxtime='
+new Date().valueOf()+(h?'&utmxhash='+escape(h.substr(1)):'')+
'" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></sc'+'ript>')})();
</script>
<-- End of Google Website Optimizer Control Script -->
  1. Locate the following in the Control Script: return c.substring(...
  2. Modify the following line as shown:
    BEFORE: return c.substring(i+n.length+1,j<0?c.length:j)
    FIXED: return escape(c.substring(i+n.length+1,j<0?c.length:j))
    Make sure to include the final closing brackets “)”
Fixed A/B Control Script
<!-- Google Website Optimizer Control Script -->
<script>
function utmx_section(){}function utmx(){} (function(){var k='XXXXXXXXXX',d=document,l=d.location,c=d.cookie;function f(n){ if(c){var i=c.indexOf(n+'=');if(i>-1){var j=c.indexOf(';',i);
return escape(c.substring(i+n.length+1,j<0?c.length:j))}}}
var x=f('__utmx'),xx=f('__utmxx'),h=l.hash; d.write('<sc'+'ript src="'+
'http'+(l.protocol=='https:'?'s://ssl':'://www')+'.google-analytics.com'
+'/siteopt.js?v=1&utmxkey='+k+'&utmx='+(x?x:'')+'&utmxx='+(xx?xx:'')+'&utmxtime='

'" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></sc'+'ript>')})();
</script><script>utmx("url",'A/B');
</script>
<-- End of Google Website Optimizer Control Script -->

Fixed Multivariate Control Script
<!-- Google Website Optimizer Control Script -->
<script>
function utmx_section(){}function utmx(){}
(function(){var k='XXXXXXXXXX',d=document,l=d.location,c=d.cookie;function f(n){
if(c){var i=c.indexOf(n+'=');if(i>-1){var j=c.indexOf(';',i);
return escape(c.substring(i+n.length+1,j<0?c.length:j))}}}
var x=f('__utmx'),xx=f('__utmxx'),h=l.hash; d.write('<sc'+'ript src="'+
'http'+(l.protocol=='https:'?'s://ssl':'://www')+'.google-analytics.com'
+'/siteopt.js?v=1&utmxkey='+k+'&utmx='+(x?x:'')+'&utmxx='+(xx?xx:'')+'&utmxtime='
+new Date().valueOf()+(h?'&utmxhash='+escape(h.substr(1)):'')+
'" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></sc'+'ript>')})();
</script>
<-- End of Google Website Optimizer Control Script -->

Note that the k=XXXXXXXXX line in the above Control Script examples is a placeholder.

Your experiment will continue as normal after you’ve made this update. There’s no need to pause or restart the experiment.

We’re committed to keeping Website Optimiser secure, and we’re deeply sorry for this issue. We will continue to work hard to prevent future vulnerabilities.

Yours sincerely,
Trevor
Google Website Optimiser Team
