How to do with a blue screen?

email post
Reactions:
Blue screen (System crush) is error that may be more common in the Windows system, a mistake. But for most of us, the occurrence may be at his wits end after a blue screen.
Here are some blue screen errors occur when some of the ways. Many ways, but today this part describes how to use Windows De
bugging Tool, or call Windbg, combined with Microsoft's forum to deal with the problem.

First, use the blue screen problem WinDBG treatment, to ensure that the system has generated a memory dump file.

Confirmed the existence of a memory dump file

The default configuration of Windows 7, the resulting core dump file may be (Kernal Memory Dump) or a small memory dump file (Minidump). If the core dump file, the default will be saved as C: \ Windows \ Memory.dmp, if it is a small memory dump files, relevant documents will be saved in C: \ Windows \ MiniDump directory.

Therefore, a blue screen, please check the system has no C: \ Windows \ Memory.dmp this file, or C: \ Windows \ MiniDump directory file named by date. For example, Mini010810-01.dmp is January 8, 2010 the first small memory dump file.
If you do not have the memory dump file, please refer to the relevant documentation.

Install Windows Debugging Tool (WinDBG)
Next, we want to install Windbg the. WinDBG can download the Microsoft 32-bit address is: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx

, 64-bit address is:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/install64bit.mspx

Note WinDBG only in English. You just find a place to both download and install the latest version of it. If you do not really understand English, you download directly to these two addresses: 32:
http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/debuggers/dbg_x86_6.11.1.404.msi

, 64 bit:
http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/debuggers/dbg_amd64_6.11.1.404.msi
http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols/debuggers/dbg_ia64_6.11.1.404.msi

Next all the way to safety and then turn on it. An WinDBG transfer file size, probably around 15-30 trillion.

Configuring Windows Debugging Tool (WinDBG)
Analysis of the memory dump file by WinDBG, we want to configure what WinDBG.
First, choose a temporary directory stored Symbol files. For example, create a directory called C: \ Temp
Then, open WinDBG, in the File Menu - "choose Symbol File Path. In the Open dialog box, enter:
SRV * c: \ temp * http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
Select OK OK. WinDBG to configured.
With the Windows Debugging Tool (WinDBG) of memory dump file
In WinDBG which, in the File menu, select Open Crash Dump, and then find that in front of said core memory dump file or a small memory dump file, select Open. Wait a moment, if you need to download from the Microsoft Web site Symbole documents, the time may be rather long. If not a large number of Warning, it means setup is successful. If Your debugger is not using the correct symbols like the information on configuration issues, to carefully check the previous step.
Wait until there Use! Analyze-v to get detailed debugging information. Words and 0: kd> prompt.
Follow the prompts, enter! Analyze-v command. Wait for command to complete.

A year ago, SiSoftware released Sandra 2010 with full support for Windows 7; in the 18 months since the launch of Windows 7, more than ever before we have seen the line blur between PC and entertainment hubs. Two months ago we released a Blu-Ray benchmark, now we have added a brand-new Media Transcoding benchmark using the new Media Foundation of Windows 7. We have also added yet another benchmark (GPGPU Cryptography) which allows direct comparison of CPU performance (using crypto instruction sets) and GPGPU performance.

Defraggler v2.0 Beta

Defraggler
Today marks a milestone in the Defraggler product history. After nearly a year of development and testing, we're proud to release the first test version of the new Defraggler v2.0!
This new release pushes the capabilities of Defraggler far beyond any other free defragmentation tool, by offering complete offline defrag during the boot process with full OS support.
Additionally the UI has been improved with a new Drive Map and customizations. We've also rearchitected the internal defrag processes to make it faster and more efficient!
This is a Beta version, so we don't recommend it for general usage just yet. We're confident it's bug free, but please only use it on test systems until we release the final build. Don't worry this will be in weeks, not months. :)

Better installer for Windows 7

email post
Reactions:
This installer has 4 advantages compared to the original setup.exe:
1. This installer supports install vista and win7 in the xp based winpe.
2. You can install the OS directly onto a USB external hard drive.
3. You can choose which partition to put the bootmgr and bcd manually, which can prevent putting
the boot files onto usb disks when booting winpe from usb.
4. If you install win7/2008 with setup.exe from winpe, the OS partition will occupy C: no matter
which partition you choose. With this installer, you can decide which letter to be used for
   the OS partition in Windows.

Attention:
1. If you install vista or 2008 with this installer, the windows partition will occupy d:.
2. After installing the OS on a USB hard drive, you are recommended to open the write cache of
the hard drive in device manager.
3. If you want to plug the usb OS to another PC, please run
   \Windows\System32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /oobe /generalize /shutdown
After the shutting down the computer, you can plug the hard disk to another computer.

Fwd: [Windows.7Tweaker.net] Windows (7) Setup and Tweaking Guide for Benchmarking

email post
Reactions:
When it comes to benchmarking, at least in some competitive form, every little bit helps. The best place to start that is with your OS. The following information is specific to Windows 7, however the general principal applies to XP and Vista.

After a nice, fresh, clean install I only installed one other program which is certainly not needed for benchmarking and normally not running during a benchmarking session. I did want to mention it though because you will see it in the images that are shown below. The program is called LogMeIn. The reason I have this installed is to allow me to tweak my OS and work on tutorials when not at home. The rest of time it is disabled. Now onto some tweaking.

Step 1

Create two partitions on your hardrive. The first partition needs to be big enough for your windows installation and whatever benchmarking software and drivers that MUST be installed. The second partition will hold all of your non-installed programs and any validation files and screenshots that you take of your bechmarks. You could also use a USB drive instead of the second partition as another option.

Step 2

Install Windows, Drivers, and all available updates.

Step 3

Goto the following website and pick your OS (for this example I am using Windows 7) then follow all the recommendations in the "Tweaked" column. If this is going to be a machine you use everyday you may want to choose the "Safe" column and skip Step 4.

This is similar to what your running services would look like (if using W7):

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 957x750.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 955x748.

Step 4

There are some additional services that can be disabled. Again if you plan to use this machine for everday use you may want to skip this step. The services are listed below and all are stopped and set to 'Disabled' except for windows update which is set to 'Manual'.

Desktop Window Manager Session Manager
Multimedia Class Scheduler
Print Spooler
Security Center
Superfetch
Themes
Windows Audio
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
Windows Defender
Windows Firewall
Windows Update (Manual)

Now the services you have running should look like something below:

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 856x570.

So with all of these tweaks we have reduced the running services from 58 to 26 (this does not include the LogMeIn services that you will not have). That is over half.

Step 5

Now that we have all of the unnecessary services disabled it is time to get rid of some Windows Features. So lets head to the Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows Features on or off.

By default it should look something like this:

You want to turn all of them off except the ones that are still checked below:

The only reason I left IE8 is simply because it gives a default browser for 3DMark to use when uploading results if I have an internet connection at the time. You can go ahead and remove this as well if you are not planning on having a connection when you bench.

Step 6

Now the tweaking is done it is time to add your benchmarking programs. ONLY install the programs that require it. For instance 3DMark requires you to install their programs to work, however SuperPi does not. If your benchmarking program gives you a choice between one that needs to be installed and one that does not, do not choose the installation. The less bloat in windows the better.

For those programs that do not need to be installed just place them on either the second partition you made or your USB thumbdrive. Place a shortcut on the desktop so that you can easily run them.

Step 7

Once you have everything installed and ready to go create a 'System Image' in case your OS becomes corrupt due to a failed overclock. To do this goto Start -> All Programs -> Maintenance -> Backup and Restore. On the left you should see 'Create System Image'. From there just follow the prompts, select where to store it (external drive maybe) and let it do it's thing.

If you ever need to resotre you can just use your Windows disc. It has a restore from image option. This will save you alot of time if something goes wrong.

Conclusion

I hope this has been easy to understand and informational. If anyone has any suggestions or comments that would improve this in any way please feel free to let me know.

lock and dismount every volume of a physical drive

email post
Reactions:
lock and dismount every volume of a physical drive
Related Topics:

LockDismount is a small tool that does only one thing (or two to be exactly). It locks and dismounts every volume of a physical drive (HD or UFD for example). That's it!

So what is that good for?

Microsoft changed the way programs can directly write to physical drives in Windows Vista and later.
More technical background informations about this new 'feature' (or restriction) can be found here: http://msd.........353.aspx

Unfortunately some older (but still good and useful) programs are not compatible with this new restriction and stopped working. You will usually see an "Access Denied" error message when they try to write to \\.\PhysicalDriveX.

This is where LockDismount can help. By locking and dismounting all volumes it will allow some of these older programs to work again.

How to use it?

It's simple. Select the Drive you want to lock and press 'Lock it!'. Now open the 'older program' and let it perform the task that usually gave you the access denied error message. When done, unlock the drive again. That's all.
The only important thing is that every volumes gets successfully locked and that you keep them locked until the other program is done.

Please note that you can not lock your system drive or any drive that holds a pagefile!

The idea for this little tool was born here:
http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?...st&p=108122 by Wonko cheers.gif
So you know who you have to blame for it

- dsfi (part of the dsfok package)
- Flashnul

Windows Vista:

ProtectData, A freeware data recovery & hiding software

email post
Reactions:

Related Topics:

ProtectData is a small "freeware" (Had I an alternative, I dare not to use the term) which presently does the following :
  1. Recovers data from a damaged floppy
  2. Hides data on a floppy using a custom (& inefficient) file system & of course, retrieves, displays & optionally saves them in the form of a file
  3. Hides the existing contents of a floppy
  4. Reads/Writes the raw sectors of a floppy & displays/save them in a form of a file

Since it's in its BETA, so lots of bugs will be there which need to be addressed. So, I'd like to request you to give it a try & let me know.

As floppy drives are obsolete today, so one can use VFD & simulate a floppy drive with a drive letter A:\ (presently, it's a must)

The program sometimes faces a problem in dismounting the drive to which it opens a handle. In that case, one should unmount & remount the image from within VFD.

Since still I'm not sure about the acceptability & also running in short of time, I couldn't (or didn't) prepare a detailed user guide, but a primitive documentation. I'll request the user to go it through before actually trying it out.

Any queries posted on this thread will be answered ASAP.

BTW, I've planned to put a bit more detailed user guide & technical documentation after a few days. I'm personally grateful to Nuno for his effort & support in guiding me doing that.

Lastly, I don't consider myself eligible to put my small endeavour here, in Projectforge, which is a breeding ground for large projects. But I started a thread here just to support the moderators' endless effort to "put everything in place". If someone develops a hard feelings, please do look on my signature text.

Unlike RegSvr32.exe included with windows RegTool features a drag n' drop interface and a file chooser to make registration easy. for those who need or prefer command line options are also available.
RegTool registers files directly using the Windows API so it is not dependent on RegSvr32.exe although if you wish you can use the -p flag to force RegTool to use RegSvr32.exe tp register/unregister files.

I have fixed this issue and left the original in code in tact for those users who haven’t been migrated to the new album system.

MySysprep 2 for Windows Vista / Windows Server 2008 / Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2

email post
Reactions:

MySysprep 2
for Windows Vista / Windows Server 2008 / Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2

Introduction

MySysprep is a tool to extend the functionality of
SYSPREP.EXE
, that is provided in Windows Operating System for creating a standard image to be deployed in an organization. MySysprep for Windows XP has been used in many organizations all over the world to simplify image preparation and deployment. MySysprep 2 is designed for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Sysprep for Unattended Deployment

In Windows Vista, an unattended answer file is stored as an XML file.  You have to use the command argument /unattend: to specify your answer file.
The common used command for Sysprep is
Sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:c:\sysprep.xml
Where c:\sysprep.xml is your answer file, which can be any directory in your local drive.
To use MySysprep, you simply put MYSYSPREP.EXE in the same directory as SYSPREP.EXE in C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep, and use MYSYSPREP.EXE instead of SYSPREP.EXE. For example
MySysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:c:\sysprep.xml

Auto Computer Name

Computer name is configured in Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup component during specialize pass. Sysprep only allows users to use a fix or a random name. With MySysprep, you can compose a computer name by using manufacturer, model, serial number and asset tag from SMBIOS, or even prompt a dialog for user input.
Most of users would use the following configuration to let Windows generate a random computer name, and rename it after setup is completed.

    *

With MySysprep, you can use the four variables %Manufacturer%, %Model%, %SerialNo%, and %AssetTag% to compose a computer name. For example,
%SerialNo%-%AssetTag%
You can also take substring from any variable by appending (StartIndex, Length)before the closing percentage. The character index is zero-based. For example,
%SerialNo(0,4)%-%AssetTag(2,4)%
You can also take substring from the end of any variable by giving a negative value as StartIndex. The last character is -1, and the one before the last character is -2 and so on. For example,
%SerialNo(-1,4)%-%AssetTag(-2,4)%
If you use a variable that is not pre-defined, it will pop up a dialog asking for user input during setup. For example,
%Please input a computer name%
However, because of the limitation of NetBIOS, if the computer name you compose is longer than 15 characters, you will get an error during specialize pass and the deployment will fail.
To find out the manufacturer, model, serial number, and asset tag of a computer, you can use the following command.
MySysprep /smbios

Prompt for User Input

In fact, any configuration value in an unattended XML can be configured to prompt for user input. For example,
http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">

        %Please input user domain%
        %Please input user name%
        %Please input user password%

      %Please input a domain to join%

During setup, it will pop up a dialog asking users for Domain, Username, Password, and JoinDomain. You can even let it show a list of options in a combo box. For example,
%Please select a domain to join{Corp;Lab1;Lab2}%
The options are enclosed by curly brackets and each one is separated by semicolons. In this example, the combo box will show three options: Corp, Lab1, and Lab2 for a multi-domain environment. Users can select a domain to join instead of typing the domain name.
To have an input box with a default value, use only one option inside curly brackets. For example, if you want the asset tag as the default computer name, but you want to have the chance to override it during setup. You can have the following configuration.
<ComputerName>%Please input a computer name{%AssetTag%}%ComputerName>
During setup, you can click OK to accept the default computer name or update it.
You can take a substring of a variable or compose a string inside curly brackets. For example,
<ComputerName>%Please input a computer name{CORP%SerialNo(0,4)%-%AssetTag(0,4)%}%ComputerName>

Image Debugging

During setup if your image failed at specialize pass, it is difficult to retrieve logs and check system state to find out what's wrong. With MySysprep, you can open a command prompt during setup, and run notepad, regedit, or other applications that don't require Windows shell to debug image problems.
To open a command prompt during setup, simply press Ctrl+Shift and then double-click on the MySysprep logo. The difference between this command prompt and the one opened by using Shift+F10 is that this command prompt will block setup going to the next stage. You have the chance to debug during the blockage. Then you have to exit the command prompt to continue setup.
